Getting Ready For Storm Spotting Season

Getting Ready for Storm Spotting Season

Storm spotting season is upon us! As the weather starts to warm up, it’s time to prepare for the possibility of severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, and other hazardous weather conditions.

What is a storm spotter?

Storm spotters are trained volunteers who help the National Weather Service (NWS) gather real-time information about severe weather. They provide critical reports of tornadoes, hail, flooding, and other dangerous phenomena, which help the NWS issue timely warnings and protect lives and property.

Why become a storm spotter?

  • Make a difference: You can play a vital role in keeping your community safe.
  • Learn about weather: You’ll gain a deeper understanding of weather patterns and forecasting.
  • Join a community: You’ll connect with other weather enthusiasts and storm spotters in your area.

How to get started:

  1. Take a Skywarn training class: The NWS offers free Skywarn training classes across the country. These classes teach you about severe weather, how to identify dangerous conditions, and how to report your observations to the NWS.
  2. Gather your equipment: You'll need a few essential items we will  cover  in   class

  3. Know your local weather: Stay informed about the weather in your area by watching local news, checking the NWS website, and following social media accounts.
  4. Be safe: Never put yourself in harm’s way while storm spotting. Stay away from dangerous areas, and always follow the instructions of local authorities.
