The Dog Days of Summer – Explained

“The Dog Days of Summer” refers to the hottest period of the summer.  It is typically characterized by oppressive heat and humidity. This phrase has its origins in ancient times and is associated with the star Sirius, also known as the Dog Star.  The Dog Star is part of the constellation Canis Major (the Greater Dog).

In ancient Greek and Roman times, the Dog Days of Summer occurred when Sirius rose and set with the sun.  This happens in late July to early August in the Northern Hemisphere. The ancients thought that the combined heat from Sirius and the sun caused the extreme temperatures during this period. Today, the term is still used to describe the sultry, hot days of summer, often spanning from early July to mid-August.

Just because we are starting to leave our peak tornado season, that doesn’t mean Nebraska can’t have dangerous weather.  People can quickly become ill due to the high heat indexes we have in the summer.  Remembering to stay hydrated is key to dealing with this type of dangerous weather.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated during the summer heat is crucial for your health and well-being. Here are some tips to help you stay hydrated:

1. **Drink Plenty of Water**: Aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day. Carry a water bottle with you and sip frequently.

2. **Eat Hydrating Foods**: Incorporate water-rich foods into your diet, such as cucumbers, watermelon, strawberries, oranges, and lettuce.

3. **Avoid Dehydrating Beverages**: Limit intake of alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks as they can lead to dehydration.

4. **Monitor Your Urine**: Check the color of your urine. Clear or light-colored urine typically indicates proper hydration, while dark yellow or amber may suggest dehydration.

5. **Use Electrolyte Solutions**: When you’re sweating a lot, replenish electrolytes with drinks like coconut water or sports drinks, but be mindful of their sugar content.

6. **Stay Cool**: Wear light, breathable clothing and seek shade or air-conditioned environments to minimize sweating.

7. **Hydrate Before, During, and After Exercise**: Drink water before starting physical activities, take water breaks during, and rehydrate afterward.

8. **Set Reminders**: Use apps or set alarms to remind yourself to drink water throughout the day.

By following these tips, you can help ensure that you stay properly hydrated and healthy during the summer heat.
